Little Portland

Portland Rose Festival, From the Water, originally uploaded by Aaron Courter.

I rented a tilt-shift lens this weekend. This is a weird lens which basically changes the plane of focus by moving lots of fun knobs and sliders on the lens itself. I can (and will) spend all day shooting with this lens. It’s so incredible fun.

The tilt-shift lens is also famous for making things like miniature so I am bent on capturing mini-Portland.

Enjoy yesterday’s shots at www.aaroncphotography.com/tiltshift.

My New Favorite Tree

A quick bike ride down the street, good light, a thrilling moment of creative trial and error and a few mosquito bites.

I love where I live.

Tribute to the Best Babysitter Ever

Our babysitter, Adrienne, is magical with our kids and an incredible person. We love her dearly.

And I thought I was a good Jedi….

See? Family Photos CAN be Fun!

Another Reason Aislynn is Pretty Cute, originally uploaded by Aaron Courter.

I had the privilege of photographing my good friends Dan & Emily (we go way back) and their awesome children on Saturday.

Portland’s Mt Tabor Park in 3pm sunlight is daunting to most photographers and put on top of that a busy Memorial Day weekend and not even mentioning Caedon & Gavin’s insane amount of brotherly energy, and you’ve got a challenge on your hands.

A combination of cuteness, good behavior, smiles, and Jedi mind-tricks made it not only fun but the photos turned out great (in my humble opinion).

Thank you so much Hawk family!!! More can be seen at aaroncphotography.com/hawks09.

Catching up on some blog posts today!

This was a pretty sweet road trip up to The Dalles to catch the end of wildflower season. As you can see, success!

I went with Ashley Forrette who brought a rented tilt-shift lens (you can see examples HERE) and we had a great time tramping around the beautiful wildflowers and enjoying the view of Mt Hood AND Mt Adams AND the amazing sunset light. And cows. And for some of these shots, I laid in (dried) cow manure. Worth it.

Rose Festival Fireworks

Day 338 – Rose Festival Fireworks, originally uploaded by Aaron Courter.

Kristen and I had a nice date night, thanks to our awesome friends, and being fairly boring and cheap, we chose to wander the Rose Festival activities, people watching and taking photos.

I liked this one particularly. It was the only way I could hand-hold a shot as well as work around the hordes of firework-crazy Portlanders (apparently there are more people who live in Portland than I knew about).

Fun times!

Portland Iron Chef Event, 2009

Portland Iron Chef Event, ’09, originally uploaded by Aaron Courter.

I had the absolute privilege of being the photographer at the Portland Iron Chef fundraiser for the Children’s Relief Nursery (www.crn4kids.org), a N Portland non-profit dedicated to preventing abuse and neglect of young children.

The hosts did an amazing job with decor and everyone had a really good time. The food smelled amazing. And hopefully they were able to raise the funds they needed to keep their operations running smoothly so they can do what they do best, helping kids.

Photographically, this was quite a fun challenge. Light was extremely low (as you can see) and shot most of the event with a wide open aperture, high ISO (around 1250), and on camera flash with my trusty diy-foamie bounce card. By keeping the ambient exposure well lit, you are able to minimize the power of in-your-face flash and create a much more effective mood. Three big boos and a hiss to in-your-face on-camera flash!

There, doesn’t that feel better? Anyways, event photography is a challenge, hard work, but rewarding when you get those special moments.

Last Bit of Fire

A nice sunset walk with the kids and wife this evening near our house in North Portland. Down near the water there is tons of these yellow weeds just glowing. I love where I live.

A Visit From Our Lovely Friend, Heidi

Heidi, B&W, originally uploaded by Aaron Courter.

Heidi is one of Kristen’s oldest friends (in friendship, not in age) and we were so happy she came out to Portland for a visit.

She was such a good sport letting me photograph her, I hope she enjoys them!

More on Flickr.

Thank you Heidi!

I love square format. I never do it. I should more often. The End.
